Hangl

The coat rack HANGL opens and closes step wise, and thus can carry a variable amount of coats and jackets.

The prelude to the development of HANGL was given by the Gipfel- or Begrüßungschnaps (summit- or welcome schnapps); a digestive schnapps that plays an important role in the entrance area of the hut, welcoming friends and hikers upon arrival. The coat rack is one of the first pieces of furniture that one encounters when entering the house. Taking off the jacket signals a sense of arrival and a respectful “feeling safe”, similar to accepting and drinking the traditional schnapps. The coat rack HANGL underlines this social act of welcoming the newcomer: When a jacket is hung onto the coat rack, not only does it open, inviting more jackets to be hung, but also shows how many people have already entered.
The system of HANGL is reminiscent of an umbrella or garden rake, and combined with variable of center-weights, can be individually tailored to the needs of the user: more or less, heavier or lighter coats and jackets.

Shave

In the design of the long-pile carpet SHAVE, the owner is actively involved by shaving individual patterns – these are highlighted by the different colored layers of the pile.

This carpet reaches its own and personal final form through the intervention of the owner. The included razor invites to cut the long-pile carpet and create individual patterns. Thus, the user also becomes the co-designer of the object. The object enters a moment of sovereignty, since the shaping force must decide to what extent it wants to make the shave - because returning to the original state of the object is impossible. The color gradation of the pile from yellow to dark green was achieved by coloring in layers in a specifically therefor built basin and underlines the intensity of the procedure.

ACB

The recycling material for ALUMINIUM CHIPBOARD is the result of a material study that deals with the reprocessing of waste products which occur at any shaving producing process like milling.

ALUMINIUM CHIPBOARD is a material that consists of aluminum shavings, which are pressed together under high pressure and subsequently heated in the oven below melting point to achieve a higher stability. This process allowed the shavings to be processed in to a different form, giving them a new purpose and function. The manufacturing process also enables the realization of three-dimensional shapes, which are otherwise difficult to implement with sheet metals. The stool serves as a product example for the use of the material ALUMINIUM CHIPBOARD.

Stuga

The holiday apartment STUGA was constructed into an old garden shed and now serves as a terrace for the homeowners and a lovely weekend stay for guests.

The holiday apartment STUGA was constructed into an old garden shed and now serves as a terrace for the homeowners and a lovely weekend stay for guests.

STUGA used to be an old utility room within a garden shed, which was remodeled to be the 16 square meter apartment it is now. To create a more open and bright space, the ceiling was striped and two additional skylights were added. Setting a statement by only using pine wood, coated in pigmented oil to keep it bright, the apartment never ceases to feel airy and the line between garden and apartment becomes blurred, also aided by the front window panel. Being fully isolated and up to modern standards, the room only needs marginal heating or cooling. For comfort a sink was installed on the outside of the shed, which is covered by the protruding roof.

Push

The dispenser PUSH is made of one piece of brass. The slight depression in the shape allows the effortless inserting of the cello tape.

The polished and folded tape dispenser consists of one piece of brass, except for the support insert. This insert aids the easy placement of the cello tape ending and serves the purpose of cutting the tape to the length needed. The depression provides a quick solution for inserting and replacing the tape roll - it is »clipped in«.

quid pro quo

The 14 bowls, made of various natural materials, provoke a break in our everyday thinking pattern: what has been learned, copied and internalized is called into question.

The project QUID PRO QUO has a theoretical focus. In order to store feelings, knowledge and memories, humans develop different techniques, overcoming the limits of conscious thinking. For example, the function, use and appearance of everyday objects are learned and continuously reproduced in life as well. The fourteen fold copy of an everyday object, a bowl shaped out of various materials causes us to question our everyday archetypes. Thus, both the loss of properties such as stability or density, as well as the gain of benefits such as lightness or biodegradability can be seen. The familiar is broken up and gives room to new and unconventional.

when we were exhaling images

The aim of the documenta 14 artwork was the flexible and efficient use of a pipe, with several different living areas - this was solved by the mobility of the bed, which in its usage resembles a mechanics creeper.

The artwork WHEN WE WERE EXHALING IMAGES is a cooperation project between the artist HiwaK and product design students of the Kunsthochschule Kassel. As part of documenta 14 it was exhibited in front of the documenta building in Kassel. Inspired by the fate of refugees in the 1990s who found refuge in sewage pipes for several weeks, the artist criticizes an elitist class, which he equates with vertical buildings such as skyscrapers. Thus, the work provokes an unfamiliar view of space. The installation consists of 20 sewer pipes with a diameter of 90 centimeters each and a length of 5.7 meters. A total of 13 living tubes and common areas such as bathroom, kitchen, library or bar were designed and furnished.
The life in the pipe that was designed is shaped by the mobile bed. As a result a literal gliding between the different phases of the day - sleeping, working, relaxing- is enabled. Shelves can be variably clamped in to the slots of the upholstery of the wall. The flexible use of the space facilitates a horizontal living.
